UPDATED!! 29/10/07 – Path for KIS v7 corrected, with kind thanks to Peter for raising this issue.
Read on if your running Kaspersky Internet Security 6 or 7 and Windows Update keeps giving the 80072F8F error, even if your time and date settings are correct…
This has been tested and confirmed on Windows Vista x64 Ultimate (build 6000) on Kaspersky Internet Security 6 (6.0.2.621) i cant guarantee the same for other operating or personally configured systems, but if you do have any luck, leave me a comment and ill compile it to the tested list
Since this post was created, I have upgraded to the latest version of Kaspersky Internet Security 7 (7.0.0.125) and the same so far seems to apply to this. There is a difference for the path to the settings compared to v6 so please see the solution listed below.
History Of The Matter
Originally posted 19-06-2007, scroll down for the actual solution…
Up until 5 minutes before this post for approximately 2 weeks i have realised that Windows Update has not been doing its job correctly! In the terms of checking the net for latest patches and installing them as required to my system.
I have this set on automatic to run the task at 6pm every day and check for new additions.
With Vista being so new, i expect updates on a regular basis, but for some reason i had not been seeing the usual ‘New Updates Available’ flag up from the task bar? So i decided to do a manual check, but all i recieved was an error code in the form of 80072F8F.
Luckily theres a link sending me on for ‘more information’ so duely i click and see what solution MS Online has to offer, and strangely, this error is stating that my time and date settings are not accurate to the server settings for Windows Update??? So i have duely gone and checked my settings… in which case its set perfect and actual has auto update switched on to Microsofts own Internet time sync!
So i checked ‘ye olde internets for more potential information and on various help forums i have only found anything mirroring what MS has told me, with some respective replies in the realm of ‘Checked my settings, they were wrong, made them right, works now!’
So i decided to leave it and see if it sorted itself out… two weeks later nothing has changed, with odd checks around the net, i have had no luck!
Finally at the end of my wits, im on the verge of posting in forums to find any additional and potnetial other fixes for this problem, when reading a similar post again within one forum… one member explained they had unistalled their copy of Kaspersky from their PC and Updates now worked perfect…
Another odd matter is Updates worked fine for a while as i remember it acting normally, this appears to arise later on? Any answers to that much appreciated!
So i research on the web for the code and Kaspersky, brought up in the top 5, Kasperskys own help forum on the exact matter.
Solution
Basically Kaspersky is set to monitor certain ports opened by your PC to connect to the Internet, now Update uses port 443 and this is monitored in the Kaspersky Network Settings and appears to block Updates scan service to check for missing updates.
Quite simply, you dont have to ditch Kaspersky! Simply do the following, there is a difference between KIS v6 and v7 so….
If you are using KIS v6
Go to the Kaspersky main window (double click the K in the task bar) then click Settings > Service > Network Settings > Port Settings
If you are using KIS v7
Go to the Kaspersky main window (double click the K in the task bar) then click Settings > Traffic Monitoring > Port Settings
You should now have a list of ports that Kaspersky is monitoring, find 443 and uncheck the box next to it, to stop Kaspersky monitoring this port.
Shut down all internet browsers and Kaspersky, and the restart Kaspersky from the Start Menu (or via Shortcut)
Now test Windows Update… if you have the same luck as me then itll hunt for updates for a moment and hopefully give you a list of new updates! I was actually missing out on around 25meg of updates for various things.
Some might ask if theyre safe to disable the 443 port? As far as it mentions on the Kaspersky site you should be OK. If it bothers you too much then disable the port, run Updates manually and then re-enable the 443 port.
Hope this may help!
tnx u r d man
THANK YOU ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Just Work GR8!!!!!!!!
THX Alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks; problem of Windows Update and website certificate errors both fixed, but readers should note that where there is no network tab, as on my KIS v7, path is >settings>traffic monitoring>port settings – there is no network tab.
Thanks Peter, i had overlooked the path on KIS v7. I have will update the main topic, thanks for your advice.
Hello,
KIS v.7 is’nt monitoring port 443 but I can’t get updates from WU. The WU page gets frozen as soon as I’m clicking “Download and Install” button.
My anti-spyware tool says that “Alexa description installed with Internet Explorer”. Is that the reason ?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi Pierre,
To be honest i dont think your problem is relating to the same thing.
It may be wise to contact Kaspersky support on this problem.
