Bioshocked

August 26, 2007

Well i must admit, Bioshock has got to be so far one of the gaming highlights of 2007,  and it hasn’t done much to disappoint so far!

The game-play is superb, the visuals and graphics are mind blowing and the aura and fidelity of that game are terrifying!

I like games that make the little hairs on you neck stand up, although this is not a game with random things jumping out from nowhere, as i said a moment ago, the ambience, noise and sounds, give this game its edge!

I must admit i have not put a huge amount of time into Bioshock so far, but will be no doubt loving it till the end!

I did have one miss-hap trying to install though. On my first attempt, i was set and ready to go, but clicking the start icon was just crashing Vista! So i had a trip onto the Internet to find any possible problems.

I soon came across quite a few disgruntled owners compiling how this-that-and-the-other had all gone wrong and were not working… not filling me with confidence!

Anyway, the nite i installed, i of course had to be up early and left it be until i returned, in which case i uninstalled and reinstalled.

Now the most concerning thing when you do install is the fact that the game downloads a patch almost instantly! Id eexpect one within a month or so, but not that quick! Although it turns out it is some form of authentication program/file that it downloads to protect against ripped off copies.

Oddly the first time round the installation didn’t ask me for the code that’s printed on the back of the manual(?) yet the second time round it did! And luckily on the 2nd time round, it fired up!

Once inside and with the screen res and graphics cranked up i was treated first off with the incredible water rendering that the critics and reviews have been banging on about for the last few months as first of all you crash land into the sea at the Rapture surface gate thing which then takes you down to the underwater city itself. Truly superb!

Playing on so far, and some of the ‘residents’ of Rapture are a little grim to say the least! If you like your horror themed games and movies, then you’ll love this! Without giving too much away for potential players (not that you wont have read this before!) all the inhabitants of the city have been playing with genetic modification, caused by the secretion of pure stem cells by a creature discovered under the ocean. Now unfortunately it all started to go a bit out of hand and everyone ended up turning on each other, with the use of these, and some quite frankly grotesque and bizarre, biological modifications, and your now up against these ‘people’ having to exploit the modifications on your own body (the character), of course i wont go on about this too much, just go out and BUY IT!

The only gripe i do have, is the game seems to crash whenever i try to use one of the Vendors, depicted with a clown? For some reason i encounter a total lock up, requiring a reset button hit :-S any info on that would be good!

Also on a good note, the 163.44 NVIDIA drivers have been playing nicely and i have had no problems what-so-ever as of late! :-D

Bioshock arrival!

August 23, 2007

A day early!

I was promised by GAME that it will be here for play first thing on the day of release but i was expecting it to be here on THAT morning, so a big w00t to GAME on that one.

However i havnt played it yet, as i have been working on the Isle Of Wight and have pretty much only just got back home (around 10pm)!

To make matters worse, i have to go to Barrow In Furniss tomorrow! (Roughly 3-4 hours either way of where i live!)

So if i install this new game tonight ill be on it till 3 in the morning! And thinking back to my PS2 days… this is not good!

Who am i kidding! Ill have it ready for tomorrow and ‘try it out for 15minutes’

So far so good with the 163.44 drivers :-D and it should be time now to see DX10 in action :-D

BETA test!

August 21, 2007

You will be fed up of me mentioning and moaning about my graphics problems soon! :-D But I have a new thing i am going to try!!!

I have decided I am going to have a go at using the latest GeForce BETA drivers which are currently at version 163.44 as offered by NVIDIA themselves. (Got to nvidia.com, drivers and software, then pick the BETA link)

I know I may have mentioned my aversion to BETA drivers in the past but I am willing to give this a chance as they claim the fact of extra compatibility for Bioshock which is due for release this Friday (24th), in the UK that is.

As i have mentioned before I would like the rig to be running as best possible for this! Luckily I am going to have a few days from now to test if it runs ok and if I continue to get the dreaded nvlddmkm has stopped working looping error/failure/pain in the arse, problem.

Of course I will report back with my findings!

EA Uninstaller

August 19, 2007

On a new problem from my recent NVIDIA strife! Once upon a time i decided to download the demo of Need For Speed Carbon from EA Link that was on offer.

As you can imagine, i had the notion that i would like to spend my hard earned cash with EA in return for a copy of NFS:Carbon but duly would like to try the demo first just to be sure I’m going to like it.

Anyway, in true EA Demo fashion it didn’t work! And for one i couldn’t figure, or could actually be bothered to figure out, how to get it going! EAInstall.dll could not be found and therefore would not allow me to turf of the program! Even an attempt of using the Uninstall Programs from the Control Panel offered no solution.

Also in true EA stance, they provde sod all information on helping this problem!

Luckily the good old internet did provide me with a solution! Which i found on the following link on Gamespotting.net, regarding that a confusion with it being spyware will cause the dll to vanish!

For the full solution ive included a section which you will find on the right of these pages for recovery and placement of the missing file.

You win!

August 18, 2007

OK i have officially given up with the NVIDIA 162.22 driver and am now going to sit back and await the new drivers to come out!

The registry tweek i came across made no massive difference. Even though i have maintained longer periods of stability, im still getting the usual crash ecentually, again this has ranged between 10minutes to 5 hours of use of the system!

And whats worse is Bioshock is released next week and im on pre-order :-D shame the PCs not going to be fully up to running it!! :-(

The battle continues…

August 15, 2007

OK, a further advancement to the NVIDIA driver saga…

Just out of pure chance i had a look on the NVIDIA website to see if anything new was on the latest release least, if you haven’t read before, like many others, i am currently suffering the crash problems with the 162.22 ForceWare drivers…

Anyway, i know 163.11 are the current BETA drivers on offer should you want to try them out, but low and behold 162.22 are still the official release.

One thing that did occur when i went to update to this version was the option to download the main driver or the international release. Now in the past when i went to go for the international version, the website crashed! So at that point i had helped myself to a copy of the regular driver (for some reason the base one is about 45meg and the international version totals around 70meg?)

Like i was saying, when i first tried it crashed, and since that point i had forgotten about it…

Randomly yesterday, Vista dragged down 9 new updates, security stuff mostly, although nothing to sort my laptop battery(!), see my last post for an explanation on that one! Just while i was having a quick browse on the info of the new updates i noticed there was an optional update which i duely clicked and turned out to be a driver for the 8800GPU card….?

From the explanation it was the same 162.22 driver but the international version, which i had completely forgotten about! Instead of letting Windows Update do the honours i went to NVIDIA.com and this time the link to the international version worked!

So with the 158.24 and nTune removed (again!) i loaded on the international 162.22 and then nTune back on top, i know some people say this crap but it does offer some BIOS info that saves having to reboot and go into the BIOS itself.

After install everything seemed OK, i set the res for the screen and enabled SLI and there were no immeadiate problems…

Come to today and again after around an hour the nvlddmkm has stopped working guff appears again and once again renders the computer as useless!

Ive given up swearing and shouting at this problem now, and just before i revert back to 158.24 i decided to have a hunt round t’internet for a potential fix or solution, and came across a very interesting comment posted on the NVIDIA forum itself regarding adding a value into the registry. The post can be found on the following link and  the author is Yerolo, which you will find roughly half way down the page.

Click here to go to Nvidia.com forum!

Now im not overlly confident with every last detail of the Windows Registry, but understand it enough to make minor changes. In which case i have carried out the addition of the two keys as detailed in that link.

Now, so-far-so-good, the nvlddmkm is yet to throw another tantrum, and so far, the PC has been running for around 2.5 hours at the time of writting this post, with no problems at all… ive even had a conciderable stint on Battlefield 2 with no problems…

I will monitor this for a week and report my progress back here and if i still encounter the same problems. If you wish to try the registry keys then please make sure you know what you are doing, or ask someone who does. If i personally do not have any future problem, i will create a guide on exactly how to perform the mod.

Vista Problem Solutions

August 13, 2007

This is one thing i do like about Vista, the fact that it goes off and finds solutions for problems that have been encountered, i wouldnt say it is obviously fool proof, but doesnt do a bad job.

Today it has informed me that from a few crashes from some components of Nero 7 Pro that there is a new driver (7.10.1.0 to be exact) in which case i was on a very old version, something like 7.8.5.0. Now i had tried to use the Nero self updating system, which seems to be crap and just makes use of itself by crashing… probably the main flag for the Solutions.

Although the Solutions box then did send me off to the right place on the Nero website to then download the latest version and updates for my install of Nero. Low and behold its all working very smooth now! So thumbs up on that one.

On the same subject it was also directed to the Creative site for some new drivers for my sound card. Now i already had a copy of the latest drivers released from the end of May sometime, and the last time i had this particular one running (SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_15_0002 againt to be precise) i had no end of problems with the microphone… also Creative drivers can be a pain in the arse sometimes as a registry value seems to be entered to detect if you have done a restart or not, and sometimes it doesnt work! Meaning you have to turf the offending value out of the registry, and while im on this, dont try messing around to find it… download a program called CCleaner (formerly known as Crap Cleaner i think) and run the registry cleaner within that (BACK IT UP FIRST!) works a treat! :)

There were also several other problems flagged by solutions, but didnt really come up with any solutions, mostly saying something along the lines of We are investigating this problem hopefully some of the 100,000 Nvidia error reports my PC has sent will be in there somewhere!!

And finally on a comedy note… one solution was to install update K991162A1 because of a problem caused by the ASUS 2000G to which i was very confused and thought it was some controller on the MotherBoard perhaps???

A quick search on the internet reveals ive had a charging faliure on my laptop battery…

Neither does my computer have a battery… nor is it a laptop!

OK, OK, so Solutions isnt ‘Perfect’!!!!

The answer is no…

August 11, 2007

So i decided to try the 162.22 NVIDIA drivers after installing 1203 BIOS on to my motherboard… still a bag of crap and do not work!

Driver still constantly bombs out!

Oddly now aswell even then 162.22 has yet been removed and 158.24 reinstalled, nTune still states 162.22 as being the current driver??? Think id better do a PROPER uninstall including a registry clean, but things are stable for the moment…

ASUS Vs. NVIDIA

August 7, 2007

Strange one tonight. I had been a bit slow to notice that a new BIOS version for the P5N32-E (which is v.1203 BTW)

Now oddly when i came back into Vista, the graphics driver had gone nuts going back to a strange screen res of something like 1260×840 and with 16bit colours! Also the NVIDIA control panel refused to get going? So i tried a restart, but no change?

Confused i just reinstalled 158.24 drivers over the exisitng install, rebooted and everything seems fine again!

Cant understand why a BIOS update would affect the graphics driver? Comments on a postcard for that one!

On a similar note if BIOS is going to affect the Graphics i might have another go at the 162.22 driver! :o

On another note im finding this computer a pain to overclock correctly! I cant seem to get any stable or consistent setting that will boot everytime. Also on this note people talk about inputting values, that to me seem impossible to alter within the BIOS and just ‘greyed out’ with a black square? Am i missing something somewhere?

Another thing ive noticed is how the old ForceWare drivers collect under a folder on the C:\ drive, ill have a look at removing old stuff to conserve disk space shortly aswell.

PC Problems (Again!)

August 6, 2007

If anyone has a solution, hints or tips for making full use of the new NVIDIA 162.22 drivers for Vista64 then take a look at the NVIDIA section under my PC pages (link to the right of this page) as im suffering the infinate loop crash of Vista constantly trying to restart a driver that clearly does not want and to say MS have put a WHQL Certification on it aswell!

Also put my PC Specs under the same section :)
